Jerry Raven has been involved in Arts in Education since 1972, as a teaching artist with YA of Western NY And Young Audiences of Rochester. Jerry is a founding member of the Hill Brothers who perform over 250 performances in NY, OH and PA. schools. Jerry and Cindy Hanna co-wrote and developed the Alphabet Awareness program over 10 years ago. This program has been implemented in 10 schools in the Buffalo, NY area as well as stretching into new school systems each year.

Alphabet Awareness
CONSONANTS: Kindergarten
VOWELS: 1st Grade
Alphabet Awareness is an 8 session residency developed to strengthen the students understanding of phonics through a kinesthetic approach consisting of original songs, dance, mime and visual art projects. Understanding the diverse needs of your students, Alphabet Awareness strengthens the skills of the traditional learner and addresses the needs of other learners who struggle with the conventional approach to reading. The residency is taught by 2 teaching artists: one musician and one dancer and is divided up into 8 twenty-five minute sessions. The first 5 sessions, students learn 4-5 songs with their accompanying movements as well as the American Sign Language hand sign for each letter. Session 6 is a review of the songs and movement, session 7 is a dress rehearsal and session 8 is the performance. Workbooks and music CDs will be provided.

Note: Pre- and post-tests can also be provided to track students competency. Please call for more information.
